Global information
The Amazon is located in the continent South-America. It is divided over five countries. The largest part of the Amazon is situated in Brazil. The other countries are: Peru, Colombia, Guyana and Surinam. The area has a surface of about 4.5 million square meters.

The Amazon River is after the Nile, the second largest river on Earth. It starts in the Andes Mountains and flows across the whole Amazon to the Atlantic Ocean. The river abandons about 6500 km, and is has the largest reservoir of the world. The reservoir is 6.5 square meters large, which is good for one fifth part of all the water worldwide. Apart from the mainstream of the river, there are hundreds of small rivers which find there way trough the area.
